So after Belle's appointment, we went to a pet store to buy Belle a dog tag. Unfortunately we were interrupted by a home delivery and had to go home so we didn't get a dog tag but I didn't like the selections at the store anyway. When it comes to something like this, I'm never a fan of generic products and need to customize it so it's more personal and fitting to Belle's personality.
So while browsing the net, I came across this site: http://www.thetagstudio.com. It's a pretty neat site that allows you to pick the shape of the dog tag, the colour, font and font size, and you can also add an icon graphic or a background graphic (which is what I chose). Text can be added on either one side or both. I chose both and put Belle's name at the front and my contact info at the back.
Can't wait for it to arrive in the mail. I hope it looks as good as it does online!
When we first brought Belle home, she'd go nuts and try to attack my hand before I even put her food bowl down. Since then I've slowly taught her how to stay while I go around the corner where she can't see me, wait 20 seconds and come back and give her a treat. Then I made her sit and placed a piece of her food slightly away from her and made her stay until I say "OK" in a really happy, excited voice.
Here she is staying while she's down which is what Steve taught her.
We've had Belle for exactly three weeks now and things are going well. She's such a sweetheart and I find myself racing home so I can pick her up, hold her like a baby above my head and kiss her soft warm belly. Then I hug her for a good 5 minutes before I train her on basic commands for another half an hour and then feed her. She's doing awesome with the commands so far. It took her two days to learn SIT, and every day after that I've taught her something new: come, stay (this was a tough one), down, up, stand, and paw. My favourite by far is PAW b/c her paw is still so tiny and it's so darn cute when she looks down at my hand and puts her paw in it.
Saturday was a huge day in Belle's little life. Given she sleeps ALLL day (no joke b/c I was working from home last week and witnessed it), we woke up early to take her to the vet for her second booster shot. She was also weighed again and we learned she gained another pound, so she's now 7.2lbs. I noticed that Belle has a lot of pent-up energy and will run up and down the kitchen floor so I sensed that she may be ready to go out for walks. The only problem is she's not fully vaccinated and won't be for another three weeks. I asked the vet anyway if we could take her out and was happy when she said yes but stick to sidewalks only where you can make sure she doesn't lick anything suspicious.
So we went home, put on her harness and let her walk from our doorway to the elevator. She was hesitant to walk by herself at first and would plop her bum on the floor and just sit there. Eventually she got the hang of it and I was so proud that my little baby accomplished her first big milestone: her very first walk. I can't wait until she's completely vaccinated and we can take her to a leash-free park.
Steve and I have been wanting to get a dog for awhile now but couldn't agree on a breed. I wanted a tiny Yorkshire Terrier while he wanted an enormous boxer which would take up a lot of room in our condo. One day I was watching an episode of Martha Stewart and she was doing a segment on dogs. She had her small cream-coloured French Bulldog sitting on a table for the entire segment and it didn't move once. I immediately fell in love b/c he was so darn cute.
I mentioned the breed to Steve and he was already a fan b/c although Frenchies are quite small for a bulldog, they're still pretty tough-looking on the exterior. It was the perfect compromise dog! A couple weeks ago I found a posting online from a breeder who had a litter of puppies that were ready to be sold. She had a few photos of her puppies in the ad which melted my heart so Steve called and arranged for a visit.
As soon as we arrived at the breeder's house, we were greeted by two Frenchies at the door. We followed the breeder upstairs and there were two of the most adorable French Bulldog puppies I had ever seen. Both were cream-coloured females from the same litter but their personalities were completely different. The bigger pup was hyper and aggressive while the smaller one was calm, sweet, and gentle. The smaller one came to sit on my lap and she looked up at me with her huge eyes and I knew I had to have her. She seemed to like me too b/c she stayed on my lap for 20 minutes and fell asleep.
We put down a deposit and brought her home last Sunday and she's been such a joy ever since. We took her to the vet last night and everyone went nuts over her and wanted to hold her. Everyday she does something so adorable that I've now become one of those pet owners who obsess over taking photos/videos of every cute pet moment.
Here are a couple I took over the last four days:
